저녁에도 시리얼 먹자고?…"마리 앙투아네트 생각나"

시리얼브랜드 켈로그의 최고경영자(CEO)가 가난한 사람은 돈을 아끼기 위해 시리얼을 저녁으로 먹는 게 좋다고 언급해 빈축을 사고 있다.

27일(현지시간) 영국 일간 텔레그래프에 따르면 개리 필닉 켈로그 CEO는 최근 CNBC와의 인터뷰에서 주로 아침 식사로 이용되는 시리얼이 저녁 식사로도 괜찮다며 "생활비 부담이 있는 가구에서는 이미 유행하고 있다"고 말했다.

그는 "시리얼 가격은 항상 저렴했으며 소비자들이 (금전적으로) 압박받을 때 훌륭한 선택지가 되는 경향이 있다"고 언급했다.

필닉 CEO는 시리얼을 먹는 것이 다른 음식을 먹는 것보다 비용이 적게 들 것이라면서 "저녁 식사로 시리얼을 먹는 것이 생각보다 더 유행하고 있으며, 소비자들이 경제적 압박을 받는 상황에서는 이런 현상이 지속될 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

해당 발언은 즉각 소셜미디어를 중심으로 반발을 불러왔다.

누리꾼들은 필닉 CEO의 발언을 프랑스 혁명 당시 시민들의 분노를 불러왔던 "빵이 없으면 케이크를 먹으면 되지"라는 말과 다를 바 없다고 비판하고 있다.

이 말은 마리 앙투아네트 왕비가 했다고 알려졌지만, 많은 역사학자는 사실이 아닌 것으로 보고 있다.

누리꾼들은 "도대체 이 무슨 반이상향적인 지옥 풍경인가"라거나 "자기 자식들에게 저녁으로 시리얼을 주겠느냐" 등 필닉 CEO의 발언에 불편한 심리를 드러냈다.

일각에서는 막대한 수입을 올리고 있는 필닉 CEO의 위선을 비난하는 목소리도 나온다.

증권거래위원회(SEC) 자료를 보면 필닉 CEO는 지난해 임금 100만달러(약 13억3천만원)와 성과급 400여만달러(약 53억여원)를 받았다.
